The Myth and Magic of the Phoenician Alphabet Let me tell you a story of the forgotten wisdom of the ancients, preserved in secret libraries of elder ages and deciphered by visionary sages, let me tell you about men who became gods and gods who became men. Let me tell you the strange mythology linking the origins of the Phoenician alphabet with the birth of the Western occult tradition. The origins of writing systems are fascinating, but sometimes it can be just as interesting to lay the reality to one side and look at where the people of the ancient world thought their writing systems came from.
My colleague Natalia has been doing this with her series of blog-posts looking at myths about writing. Here, though, I want to look in a bit more depth at the stories told about the development of the Phoenician alphabet. Because they get a bit weird. The Phoenician alphabet has always held a slightly enigmatic place in the history of writing.
Even in antiquity it was acknowledged that it was the Phoenicians who had brought the alphabet to Europe. But beyond identifying Phoenician as the model and inspiration for the Greek alphabet, both ancient and early modern scholars showed remarkably little interest in asking where the Phoenicians themselves got writing from. There is one exception to this: Many generations after him a god Sourmoubelos and Thuro, whose name was changed to Eusarthis, brought to light the theology of Taautos which had been hidden and overshadowed, by allegories.

A Guide to the Ogham Alphabet. Ogham is an ancient Irish alphabet. Each letter represented by a mark along one central line. Non-pure abjads such as Hebrew and Arabic script and abugidas use diacritics for denoting vowels. Hebrew and Arabic also indicate consonant doubling and change with diacritics; Hebrew and Devanagari use them for foreign sounds. Devanagari and related abugidas also use a diacritical mark called a virama to mark the absence of a vowel. Emoticons are commonly created with diacritic symbols, especially Japanese emoticons on popular imageboards.
Alphabetization or collation[ edit ] Main article: Collation Different languages use different rules to put diacritic characters in alphabetical order. French treats letters with diacritical marks the same as the underlying letter for purposes of ordering and dictionaries. Languages that treat accented letters as variants of the underlying letter usually alphabetize words with such symbols immediately after similar unmarked words. For instance, in German where two words differ only by an umlaut, the word without it is sorted first in German dictionaries e.
However, when names are concerned e. For a comprehensive list of the collating orders in various languages, see Collating sequence.

Characteristics[ edit ] The characteristics of party games tend to include: A game can support a relatively large or undefined number of players, compared to more traditional board games or card games that require a small, set number of players. Some games, especially commercial games, have a set limit based on available equipment; others are limited by other mechanics of the game like time for each turn, while still others have no practical limit.
Team-based play in party games is common, but not required. Games that divide players into two, three, or four roughly equal teams, such as Cranium , Charades or Pictionary tend to allow for larger total numbers of players. By contrast, other games such as Werewolf and How to Host a Murder are role-based, with each player being given a character or other role to play in the course of the game. The number of players is limited to the number of roles, but in many such games there are “generic” roles allowing for a high degree of flexibility.
Cooperation and interaction between players is encouraged. Both team and role-based play generally encourage this social aspect to the game; games that do not encourage this interaction generally make poor party games. Multiple ways to play and contribute. For example, in Fictionary not everyone needs to create plausible dictionary definitions; humorous submissions are welcome.
In Charades, players can actively participate in guessing without taking a turn at acting.

Yiddish was the language of Ashkenazic Jews, but not Sephardic Jews Yiddish is based on German, Hebrew and other languages Yiddish uses an alphabet based on Hebrew There are standards for transliterating Yiddish Yiddish was criticized as a barrier to assimilation Yiddish developed rich literature, theater and music S’iz shver tsu zayn a Yid It’s tough to be a Jew – Yiddish folk saying [Yiddish] A hybrid of Hebrew and medieval German, Yiddish takes about three-quarters of its vocabulary from German, but borrows words liberally from Hebrew and many other languages from the many lands where Ashkenazic Jews have lived.
It has a grammatical structure all its own, and is written in an alphabet based on Hebrew characters. Scholars and universities classify Yiddish as a Germanic language, though some have questioned that classification. They had their own international language known as Ladino or Judesmo, which is a hybrid of medieval Spanish and Hebrew in much the same way that Yiddish combines German and Hebrew.
At its height less than a century ago, Yiddish was understood by an estimated 11 million of the world’s 18 million Jews, and many of them spoke Yiddish as their primary language. Yiddish has fallen on hard times, a victim of both assimilation and murder. Today, less than a quarter of a million people in the United States speak Yiddish, about half of them in New York. Most Jews know only a smattering of Yiddish words, and most of those words are unsuitable for polite company.
But in recent years, Yiddish has experienced a resurgence and is now being taught at many universities. There are even Yiddish Studies departments at Columbia and Oxford , among others, and many Jewish communities provide classes to learn Yiddish. Many Jews today want to regain touch with their heritage through this nearly-lost language.
